Cat Stevens

Written and originally recorded by Yusuf Islam during his career as popular artist Cat Stevens, the song Peace Train has shown remarkable strength in its message and longevity. It appeared on his album Teaser and the Firecat, and a number of other album releases. Sung as a message of hope and peace in an earlier time of war, its message resonates today as it did then.

The song has crossed musical, cultural and political boundaries, having been covered by a variety of other artists, including...

  • Dolly Parton
  • Ladysmith Black Mamabazo
  • Richie Havens
  • Moonshadow Bluegrass Artists
  • 10,000 Maniacs
  • Celia Slattery
  • and various other DJ mixes and artists

After conversion to Islam, he abandoned his career as a rock idol for many years, pursuing a spiritual and philanthropic path. He has had ongoing collisions with the notoriety connected with his previous life. See the Wikipedia entry on Cat Stevens and read his interview with Larry King for a more complete picture.

He has recently returned to music, with his participation in concerts and benefits, and the release of new works. He has also supported to the careers of other artists through his own web presence. Some of these artists can be found on Jamal Records.

Following his wonderful BBC One Session performance Yusuf talks about his album "An Other Cup" and about picking up a guitar for the first time in over twenty years.
